Luz Ortiz joined the Frontiers CTSI staff earlier this year as the new Community Engagement Specialist, working directly with Cherayla Haynes and the Community Engagement team. Ortiz, who has worked in public health for over a decade, will work throughout the Kansas City area to continue to build relationships and trust within the many communities Frontiers and its investigators serve.
In addition to her role at Frontiers, Luz also serves as a team member with the KU Medical Center’s Center for African American Health. Her work is grounded in addressing the five key risk factors identified in the Community Health Improvement Plans for Wyandotte and Sedgwick Counties: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, cancer, and fetal and infant mortality.
“I really want to help improve health outcomes in the community,” Ortiz said. “I started working in public health to help people navigate the healthcare system and really helped connect them with health literacy to aid in improving their health.”
Ortiz also worked with the late Broderick Crawford and considered him a mentor.
