The University of Kansas School of Health Professions has introduced KU Cares, which will focus on preventing disability and maximizing the quality of life in persons living with a disability.
“Our overall goal is to help improve the lives of individuals living with disabilities and preventing disabilities,” said Jacob Sosnoff, Ph.D., associate dean of research in the KU School of Health Professions and professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. “The center is disease/pathology agnostic, so the focus is truly helping individuals maximize their participation in their communities.”
The new center is not only a resource for researchers within KU Medical Center’s three campuses but to researchers across the region, including all of Frontiers partner institutions. Education will be a key component of the new center helping with lifestyle modifications, which include physical activity and nutrition, and on how and where to access care to help improve their lives.
“For the interventions we are developing, we want to make sure they are suitable in all of the communities we serve,” Sosnoff said. “It is important that the interventions work in the real world and not just in a medical center setting. We are also working with other groups to help address barriers that individuals face and where they can receive help.”
