Morbidity Matters: Predicting Fractures in Parkinson's Disease
Alejandra Camacho-Soto, M.D. from the University of Kansas Medical Center (Kansas City), participated as a scholar in the KL2 program. Her research project titled "Morbidity Matters: Predicting Fractures in Parkinson's Disease" was conducted in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department under the guidance of Jacob Sosnoff, Ph.D. This project commenced on July 1, 2023, and concluded on June 30, 2024.
During her time in the program, Camacho-Soto published two key manuscripts related to her KL2 work, focusing on smoking prediction algorithms and the impact of prescription medications on neurodegenerative diseases among Medicare beneficiaries. Building on this research, she also submitted an R01 proposal in June 2024, to develop and validate a Parkinson’s disease-specific fracture risk model using electronic health records, with the goal of informing future clinical trials and treatment strategies.
