Pilot Study Title: Implementation Feasibility Pilot of a Patient Decision-Aid for Chronic Coronary Disease
The aim of this project is to rapidly accelerate the time from which we generate evidence from clinical trials to providing evidence-based patient-centered tools to support shared decision making for patients and clinicians in clinical practice. Currently, it takes approximately 17 years for research evidence to reach clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.
For chronic coronary disease, the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, it is important, and part of guideline-directed care, for shared decision making to occur between patients and clinicians when deciding the best treatment options.
“Shared decision making, and specifically, using patient-centered tools tailored to specific patient risk factors when making treatment decisions is still a novel method,” Dr. Farr said. “There are some tools out there, but they are more generic and not implemented well. We want to implement our Patient Decision Aid which is personalized to a patient’s risk factors, aligns with their values and preferences, and can empower patients when speaking with their clinician about how to best treat their chronic coronary disease.”
Treatment for chronic coronary disease is not straightforward and depends on a number of factors; our goal is to support patients to understand their best treatment options. With implementing our Patient Decision Aid, the hope is that this personalized shared decision making will improve the quality and patient-centeredness of care and improve population health outcomes.
