Pathway Programs

The Workforce Heterogeneity core recognizes the many pathway programs that support students who are interested in medicine and science. The following pathway programs provide early opportunities for success in Translational Research and Science.

Programs

Frontiers-specific programs

Frontiers offers programs for middle school to undergraduate students through schools, school districts and other relevant programs.

We currently offer three specific opportunities to help introduce students to careers in research.

1) Schedule a guest speaker from one of our resources and services to enable students to see what they are learning in the classroom correlates to future careers.

2) Tour program: This opportunity provides students the chance to tour Children's Mercy Research Institute and the KU Medical Center Clinical and Translational Science Unit of the Fairway, Kan. campus. Students will have the opportunity to hear from researchers and others working in research and see spaces where research and research studies are conducted. (Additional tour stops will be added in 2026.)

3) Attend Frontiers annual Research Symposium. Each year, Frontiers identifies a theme for the day, which includes a keynote speaker, several breakout sessions, oral presentations, panel discussions and a poster session. It is an opportunity to learn directly from researchers about their research and how it is impacting healthcare. Students have the opportunity to network with researchers and research staff, along with presenting a poster during the poster session.

If you are a teacher or school/school district staff interested in exploring these opportunities, please reach out to us for more details.
