Improving Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in the Juvenile Detention and Correctional Facility
April McNeill-Johnson, M.D. from Children’s Mercy Kansas City, is currently participating as a scholar in the KL2 program. Her research project titled "Improving Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in the Juvenile Detention and Correctional Facility" is being conducted in the Pediatrics Department under the guidance of Melissa Miller, M.D. This project commenced on July 1, 2023, and is set to conclude on June 30, 2025.
In the first year as a KL2 scholar, McNeill Johnson has focused on health equity for youth in the juvenile legal system, specifically through her qualitative research project on improving sexual and reproductive health care in juvenile detention facilities. Her project has received IRB approval from multiple institutions and began formally in July 2024. Additionally, she has made significant progress in her career development with multiple manuscript publications, presentations at major conferences, acceptance into the APA Health Policy Scholars Program, completion of relevant coursework and training, and a pending application for the NIH Loan Repayment Program.
