What is Translational Science?
Translational science is the field of investigation focused on understanding the scientific and operational principles underlying each step of the translational process.
- Focused on the general case that applies to any target or disease.
- Understand common causes of inefficiency and failure in translational research projects (e.g., incorrect predictions of the efficacy of new drugs, ineffective clinical trial recruitment).

“More Treatments for All People More Quickly”
Examine the translational research ecosystem at a systems level to:
- Determine where common pitfalls exist in the translational process
- Develop innovative solutions that will ultimately benefit research across a range of diseases and conditions.
This disease-agnostic approach to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of all translational research is known as translational science.
National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Resources
The NCATS Translational Science Principles characterize effective translational science approaches. The Principles were generated by a committee with expertise across the translational spectrum, and in science, operations and administration.
The translational science spectrum shows the stages of translational research. The stages do not happen in a straight line or in one direction. Each stage builds upon and informs the others.

NCATS Translational Science Resources
Translational science is the field that generates scientific and operational innovations that overcome the long-standing barriers along the translational research pipeline. By advancing translational science, we can improve the process of turning research observations into health solutions and ultimately bring more treatments to all people more quickly. Explore these resources to learn more about translational science.
NCATS Translational Science Training and Education Resources
Translational science bridges the gap between scientific discoveries and improved patient care. There is a need for training and education resources to equip researchers with the necessary skills and knowledge to accelerate the translation of biomedical innovations. Our primary goal for the training and education resources is to grow a skilled workforce capable of effectively navigating the complex landscape of translational research.
