Introduction to Biostatistics for Clinical & Translational Research - July 19

Date/Time: Jul 19, 2024, 08:00 AM to Jul 19, 2024, 09:50 AM

Location: Lied Auditorium, KU Medical Center Campus, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas.

The KUMC Department of Biostatistics & Data Science, with support from the University of Kansas Cancer Center and Frontiers, offers this free four-day program in biostatistical methods for clinical and translational researchers.

Biostatistics plays a critical role in clinical and translational research, influencing everything from study design to results interpretation. Clinicians and scientists should have a basic understanding of biostatistics to support critical appraisal of research, collaboration, communication, and evidence-based practice.  Biostatistical skills can empower researchers to participate more actively in shaping study design and analysis to ensure clinically relevant and feasible research questions, reduce the risk of bias, and improve research efficiency.

Topics include:

  • Scientific Rigor and Reproducibility
  • Hierarchy of Study Design and Scientific Evidence
  • Hypothesis Testing and Estimation
  • Common Statistical Methods (Student’s t, Chi-square, ANOVA, Linear regression, Logistic regression, Survival analysis)

Nov 18 11:00 AM • Virtual Reproducibility Rounds How Reproducible is Health Science Research? Abstract: We will discuss the methods, results, and implications of a series of scoping and systematic reviews that synthesized evidence on the reproducibility of health science research. Specific aims of the projects included describing and categorizing methods and metrics used to quantify reproducibility, synthesizing estimates of the prevalence of reproducible research, and characterizing factors associated with reproducibility. We will describe our dataset of 1,340 articles with a focus on the sub-set with empirical data. We will report on the seven methods used for conducting reproducibility research, 38 metrics to quantify reproducibility, 180 estimates of the prevalence of reproducibility, and 234 factors associated with reproducibility which we grouped into modifiable and nonmodifiable categories. Finally, we will discuss the significant heterogeneity in the evidence and challenges in synthesizing this data. Reproducibility Rounds, produced in collaboration with representatives from multiple CTSA hubs, is a bimonthly webinar, designed to foster an exchange of experiences and ideas between institutions, researchers and other stakeholders about how to improve biomedical research rigor and reproducibility. Rounds will be interactive. Future sessions and recordings of past rounds can be found on the SPORR website. Interested in contributing? Contact us at sporr@stanford.edu.
