NIH Notice: Reminding Extramural Community of the Definition of Foreign Components

On May 27, 2026, the NIH released a Notice reminding the extramural community of their definition of foreign components: “The performance of any significant scientific element or segment of a project outside of the United States, either by the recipient or by a researcher employed by a foreign organization, whether or not grant funds are expended.” An activity that could be considered to have a foreign component is publishing with foreign co-authors.

To ensure that Frontiers complies with NIH, authors from the United States publishing with authors from foreign countries should only acknowledge an individual who provided a service, not Frontiers (CTSA or grant number). For example, if a Implementation Science consultation was provided by Maggie Patek Kalman, MSW, MPH, please acknowledge her in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript not Frontiers (CTSA or grant numbers). If you have questions about who to acknowledge, contact Robin Liston, MPH at rliston2@kumc.edu.

The Full Notice (NOT-OD-26-084) can be found here.
