Expanding patient access to research opportunities through novel approaches: An institution’s implementation of an opt-out, cold-contact recruitment process and methods to improve the feasibility and rigor of remote trials
TIN webinar
Tara Pittman, MA, CCRP & Jennifer Dahne, Ph.D
This webinar will describe the Medical University of South Carolina’s adoption and implementation of an opt-out, cold-contact patient recruitment policy (referred to as Patient Outreach Recruitment) allowing researchers to reach out to potentially eligible study subjects identified via the electronic health record. The reasoning that lead to the use of this approach will be explained and the development of the implementation workflow and patient communication surrounding the process will be outlined. In addition to describing the Patient Outreach Recruitment process, this webinar will also showcase REDCap tools, developed at MUSC, to improve both the feasibility and rigor of remote trials. These tools focus on increasing representativeness of participant samples enrolled in clinical trials as well as decreasing the incidence of fraud.

Research and Discovery Grand Rounds: Leading High-Impact Team Science: Opportunities and Challenges in Clinical and Translational Research
By definition, Clinical and Translational Research is team science. Moving discoveries from the bench to the clinic to the community requires collaboration across disciplinary, career stage, and institutional boundaries. While team science has many benefits, including the ability to address more complex questions, there are also challenges in coordinating people and tasks across those boundaries. Join Betsy Rolland, Ph.D., MLIS, MPH as she presents team science best practices that CTR leaders can implement to mitigate some of the challenges and discusses the benefits of Collaboration Planning, an intervention developed at the University of Wisconsin’s CTSA and now being implemented in Frontiers. With a minimal investment of time and effort, Collaboration Planning can help teams design a more deliberate approach to their collaborative work that results in lower levels of conflict and greater scientific progress.

TIN webinar: Social Media Recruitment with Meta Restrictions
Brooke Crockett, BA
This webinar will provide information on how to create Meta ads for study recruitment. In January 2021, Facebook (now Meta) changed their privacy policy, making it more difficult to target ads to people based on race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious affinity or anything that would be protected under HIPAA (i.e., cancer). This privacy update made targeted recruiting for clinical trial more difficult. During this presentation, Brooke will explain how to build a social media ad for recruitment while also focusing on workarounds of Meta restrictions

TIN webinar: SMART IRB Agreement 3.0 Proposed Revisions
Barbara Bierer, MD, Nichelle Cobb, PhD & Polly Goodman, CIP
The SMART IRB Agreement was launched in 2016 after extensive collaboration with government agencies, academic medical centers (including all Clinical and Translational Science hubs and many of their affiliates), and industry partners. To date, the SMART IRB Agreement has been signed by over 1130 entities, supported by (1) the SMART IRB platform, a robust online reliance system to support reliance requests; (2) numerous resources to train and educate the regulatory and investigator community, including a publicly-available learning center; and (3) a highly functional harmonization steering committee facilitating the alignment of policies and processes related to single IRB review.
Over the past few years, SMART IRB leadership and representatives from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and Department of Energy (DOE), have engaged in discussions regarding revisions to the Agreement to enable these federal agencies and other institutions to sign on to the SMART IRB Agreement. The proposed revisions reflected in SMART IRB Agreement version 3.0 are provided for review and comment to all current and prospective signatory institutions.
This webinar will provide:
• A summary of the proposed changes
• How public comments are submitted
• An overview of the process, timeline, and requirements for signing and re-signing the SMART IRB Agreement version 3.0
• New and existing SMART IRB resources and educational tools
