August Open Forum on Biostatistics

The Open Forum on Biostatistics is a service provided by the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) function of Frontiers, our institutions Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The purpose of this forum is to provide investigators with an opportunity to ask questions related to BERD topic areas. These may relate to research and training, and the forum provides a new avenue to connect with colleagues in support of the research and education missions of the BERD function of Frontiers. This meeting is open to staff and faculty from all Frontiers Partner Institutions.
The forums are hosted by Dr. Wendy He and Dr. Henry Yeh, co-leads of the BERD function of Frontiers.

KUMC PI Crash Course
Launched in 2024, the P.I. Crash Course is an intensive orientation program for investigators who are new to conducting research at KU Medical Center. This program is designed to help investigators quickly get acquainted with the research enterprise and learn how to access services and resources to support their research.
Investigators from all schools and disciplines are welcome, as are seasoned investigators looking to refresh knowledge. P.I. Crash Course is offered twice a year, with in-person sessions held each spring and fall. Registration is required and is currently open! The next session is Thursday, May 22, 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. in Beller Conference Center.

Genomic Medicine Short Course 2025
Next generation sequencing has had a profound impact on biomedical research. Clinicians and scientists seeking to stay abreast of the field may be challenged by the rapid rate of genomic discovery and technologic advancement. The Children's Mercy Kansas City Genomic Medicine Center, with support of the NIH, offers a four-day CME/CEU program in translational genomics.
Topics include:
Technical and analytic aspects of DNA and RNA sequencing
Variant analysis
Gene regulation and epigenetics
Single cell sequencing
Clinical and ethical implications of genomics
The course features workshops to teach NGS analysis skills. A unique aspect of the program is the opportunity for enrollees to have genomic sequencing completed on themselves.
Participants can use the resultant data file as they learn variant identification and characterization. This strategy, known as Personalized Genomic Educational Testing (PGET) is optional and provided at no additional cost.
This program is supported by the NHGRI Initiative to Maximize Research Education in Genomics: Courses for Skills Development (R25) program.

Developing skills to become intentional, effective leaders and collaborators.
By reflecting on personal team experiences, participants will gain practical insights and create concrete, actionable applications for their teams.
This workshop will be facilitated by Whitney Sweeney, PhD, Scientist with Team Science at the Institute for Clinical & Translational Research, UW–Madison. She holds a PhD in cognitive and biological psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Leveraging over 20 years of experience in higher education, she empowers teams to establish effective processes that lead to enhanced communication, psychologically safe team cultures, and innovative collaborative problem-solving.
