May 06 11:00 AM • Virtual Trial Innovation Network Webinar: Paying Participants in Research: Time to Move Forward… Paying Participants in Research: Time to Move Forward… Presenter: Neal Dickert, MD, PhD Dr. Dickert will discuss practical and ethical considerations related to paying research participants for participation. In particular, he will discuss available data that suggest many traditional concerns about payment are not grounded in evidence, address the potential for payment to function differently in different research contexts, and consider the potential role of payment in addressing rather than exacerbating concerns about distributive justice. May 15 11:00 AM • virtual Trial Innovation Network Webinar: Equipping researchers to overcome recruitment challenges: An institution’s programmatic response to the voice of its research community Equipping researchers to overcome recruitment challenges: An institution’s programmatic response to the voice of its research community Meredith Zauflik, MPA  &  Kitt Swartz, MPH This webinar will discuss how the recruitment program of Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute (OCTRI), the CTSA at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), focused its programmatic development in response to the researcher’s voice. How they engaged the research community through surveys, interviews, and ongoing interaction with the research team community to identify the experiences, challenges, needs and culture of recruitment at the institution. The services that were developed and offered, based on results and findings, included consultations, guidance materials, and educational seminars. Additionally, OCTRI Recruitment will discuss the outcomes of these initiatives, along with the lessons learned of trying to measure the impact a program can have on recruitment. This session provides an overview of identifying and preventing invalid survey responses, including examples from the presenters’ experiences conducting online surveys, and the results from a recent survey of researchers conducting online surveys. The focus of the presentation will be discussing proactive strategies for invalid survey response management, including specific REDCap settings. Jun 10 08:00 AM • Hybrid Genomic Medicine Short Course 2024 Next generation sequencing has had a profound impact on biomedical research. Clinicians and scientists seeking to stay abreast of the field may be challenged by the rapid rate of genomic discovery and technologic advancement. The Genomic Medicine Center, with support of the NIH, offers a four-day CME/CEU program in translational genomics. Topics include: Technical and analytic aspects of DNA and RNA Variant analysis Gene regulation and epigenetics Polygenic Risk Scores Clinical and ethical implications of genomics The course features hands on workshops to teach NGS analysis skills, including analysis of long read HiFi genomes.  A unique aspect of the program is the opportunity for enrollees to have genomic sequencing completed on themselves. Participants can use the resultant data file as they learn variant identification and characterization. This strategy, known as Personalized Genomic Educational Testing (PGET) is optional and provided at no additional cost. This program is supported by the NHGRI Initiative to Maximize Research Education in Genomics: Courses for Skills Development (R25) program. More information. Epic is an EHR platform that has a strong commitment to innovation through iterative collaboration with our community of stakeholders. This community includes organizations using our software, patient/participant/consumer advisory groups, consortia and workgroups focused on a range of aspects of clinical research and trials, as well as our own teams. In this presentation we’ll share some of the ways our platform has effectively accelerated recruitment and enhanced representation and retention in clinical trials. Both past successes and new opportunities to impact the trial landscape will be discussed. Jul 12 08:00 AM • Lied Auditorium, KU Medical Center Campus, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas. Introduction to Biostatistics for Clinical & Translational Research - July 12 The KUMC Department of Biostatistics & Data Science, with support from the University of Kansas Cancer Center and Frontiers, offers this free four-day program in biostatistical methods for clinical and translational researchers. Biostatistics plays a critical role in clinical and translational research, influencing everything from study design to results interpretation. Clinicians and scientists should have a basic understanding of biostatistics to support critical appraisal of research, collaboration, communication, and evidence-based practice.  Biostatistical skills can empower researchers to participate more actively in shaping study design and analysis to ensure clinically relevant and feasible research questions, reduce the risk of bias, and improve research efficiency. Topics include: Scientific Rigor and Reproducibility Hierarchy of Study Design and Scientific Evidence Hypothesis Testing and Estimation Common Statistical Methods (Student’s t, Chi-square, ANOVA, Linear regression, Logistic regression, Survival analysis) Jul 17 11:00 AM • Virtual Trial Innovation Network Webinar: Striking the Balance: Integrating Innovative Technology and Personalized Engagement in Clinical Trials Recruitment Striking the Balance: Integrating Innovative Technology and Personalized Engagement in Clinical Trials Recruitment Siobhan Vasquez, BS, CCRP,  Fred Stevenson, RN, MSN, FNP & Tiffany Norris, BS Are you tired of recruiting in an inefficient way?
