Research Editing Services

Frontiers offers free editing services to help clinical and translational researchers succeed with grant applications and manuscripts. The editor works with researchers to maximize the clarity and presentation of their documents.

Eligibility

The editing service is open to clinical and translational researchers at all Frontiers partner institutions. Frontiers makes efforts to accommodate all requests for editing services, but the editor may triage requests during busy periods. Priority is based on the timing and type of request, the researcher's career stage, and alignment with the overarching goals of Frontiers. Priority is determined using information captured on our Editing Service Request Form.

Priority and Scope of Services

Early engagement with the editor improves your priority and helps ensure full attention to the development of your grant application or manuscript. In periods of high demand, please expect it will at least take two weeks for substantive review. With a sufficient lead-team, the editor can assist by:

  • correcting grammar and usage errors
  • reducing word counts
  • refining the language
  • improving organization and flow
  • enhancing clarity and specificity with respect to review criteria
  • performing quality checks and identifying inconsistencies
  • editing for consistent style and tone (on multi-authored manuscripts)
  • improving format and headings and graphics

If it becomes necessary to triage requests, grant proposals have priority over manuscripts. Additional consideration is given to requests from those who:

  • are engaged in Frontiers programs
  • are early-career investigators moving toward independent research careers
  • represent or engage with groups historically excluded or under-represented in Clinical and Translational Research

Request Assistance

Please complete the Editing Service Request Form to inquire about support for your grant application or manuscript. You will be asked to upload an abstract or specific aims page. After submitting the service request form, you will be contacted by Frontiers within 48 hours to discuss next steps.

Prepare for Funding Success

Most funding agencies recommend starting an application 3-6 months before the deadline. Advance preparation ensures time for multiple rounds of review and feedback - from the funding agency, as well as from mentors, colleagues and editing services. Take time to understand agency priorities, get to know your audience, and refine your writing. To maximize the quality of support for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) application, please contact the editor at least one month prior to the external deadline.
